The Second Quarterly Update | my first Tahereh Mafi book & a new favourite read

🐣 APRIL TO JUNE 🦩

favourite

THE UNBROKEN BY C. L. CLARK // this fantasy debut book just ticked all the boxes, with ease. The politics. The writing. The characters. The relationships. The drama. The risks. The plot. It was really compelling and the main relationship was so human… in an endearing and deadly way. Review coming soon.

great books

TURTLE UNDER ICE BY JULEAH DEL ROSARIO // this felt like capturing a moment in these sisters’ lives. Only slightly touching on who there were, but I felt every emotion of this specific moment in their lives. It was different but I did really enjoy and appreciate it for that difference.

FAR FROM THE TREE BY ROBIN BENWAY // this was a solid contemporary. I love the family focus and how it did three perspectives really well. I liked how each one was distinct and seeing the siblings earn their bond with each other. Maya was my favourite.

THE GOOD IMMIGRANT, EDITED BY NIKESH SHUKLA // the use of multiple short stories allows authors to pinpoint specific experiences, but when combined it allows you to begin to see how widespread and nuanced racism is in the UK. With many different voices, it allowed for a variety of tones to be included such as humourous, analytical, and emotional. This makes it an entertaining and interesting read, as well as important.

THE LIBRARY OF THE UNWRITTEN BY A. J. HACKWITH // a fun read for a change but it still maintained a lot of danger and risk. The cast of characters were really unique, I loved the magic and the writing was great. A solid read, no doubt.

DAISY JONES AND THE SIX BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID // a re-read for me and I loved it. The characters are flawed, and it isn’t necessarily your typical rock ‘n’ roll group but with many of the classic elements. I love how Reid talks about art and love in this book.

THE THINGS WE DO NOT TELL THE PEOPLE WE LOVE BY HUMA QURESHI // a short story collection that captured very human emotions. That was definitely the strength of this book, it didn’t try to make you love characters in 15 pages, it made you feel what they were feeling. And it was always complex feelings.

MIRAGE BY SOMIAYA DAUD // such a good fantasy premise and execution. A royal political drama with an unlikely character at the centre. It prioritised feelings and relationships over action, unlike some fantasy stories, but nonetheless very compelling. The plot is so solid and the sequel looks even better.

good stuff

FINDING MY VOICE BY NADIYA HUSSAIN // as it wasn’t in chronological order, but split into her different “roles”, it made for a slightly stuttering but conversational read. I love Nadiya so it was great to learn more about her life, especially as she is quite a funny. It was very empowering read too.

EMPIRE OF GOLD BY S. A. CHAKRABORTY // the plot could have been soo much more (in fact, my least favourite perspective in the prior books was the saving grace of this one) but I loved the characters and writing sooo much. Check out all my spoilery thoughts?

THE ROAD TRIP BY BETH O’LEARY // this book gave me bridge jones vibes. When I first started it, I thought this was going to be a drag in terms of both characters and plot, but then the character hooked me. It ended up quite interesting but it is more vibes/relationship than plot, for sure. It could have been a bit shorter.

good but for me, slightly missed potential

THE SWITCH BY HELLY ACTON // for a reality show book, it should not have been this bland. Still, I admired the message and empowerment at the centre of the book.

DIAL A FOR AUNTIES BY JESSE SUTANTO // the chaotic murder, rom-com worked really well for me. It was both fun, dramatic and endearing. However, the romance. I struggled with it a lot. It was overly perfect and not in a fun way. The book did not need the romance and it put such a downer on the book for me.

THIS WOVEN KINGDOM BY TAHEREH MAFI // I was really excited about this and it was a good book, but disappointing as well. It had the potential for more and I wish I liked the main characters more. Still, the setting, mythology, writing and run-up to the ending were great. I will still be checking out the sequel, hopefully, it will have less of an overstretched plot too.

HOW TO KILL YOUR FAMILY BY BELLA MACKIE // a very cynical main character who was alright for a change, but she would grate on you after a while because she has a problem with EVERYTHING. But, at least her character voice gave the novel uniqueness as she recounts events. I wouldn’t say it was a remarkable book, as it had very few twists and the entire book is recalling the past so it could be a bit dry. Yet, I liked it for a change as it caught me in a good mood.

THE AFTERPARTY S1 // this genre mash-up, comedy murder mystery was “just what the doctor ordered”. Mystery and comedy go together so well and I love how the comedy was in the delivery in this, it wasn’t just about making the plot OTT. I watched this with my sister and we had such a blast, it was so fun guessing every week. I 100% recommend it.

BRIDGERTON S2 // It was a well-done love triangle. The emotions were there and Kat and Anthony were great leads. I much preferred it over S1.

KILLING EVE S4 // Season 4 wasn’t the same as it had been. It was slightly a drag but I am glad I experience the conclusion to this series.

HAWKEYE // I don’t think the Barton children have natural chemistry with Clint at all, but I love the introduction of Kate Bishop. She’s perfect. I think the plot would have done better in a movie but I enjoyed watching it nonetheless.

★★★★

TRUST // Quite a slow show, but I loved the filming style and production. Plus, the plot captured the human ways plans can go wrong and how people try to rectify them. It was different so it was alright for a change.

HART OF DIXIE // I rewatched the entire show, the first two series are really entertaining. The last two didn’t have the same feel. Nonetheless, I love the romantic chemistry, the comedy approach to a drama, the small-town feel and the proof you don’t always need a big villain to have an interesting story. It’s a feel-good show.

MOON KNIGHT // I LOVED THIS! Steven has my heart. The plot and characters really stood out to me. Plus, Moon Knight has to have one of the best costumes in the MCU. It was genuinely interesting to watch. Episodes 1 and 4 were my faves.

DERRY GIRLS S3 // the final season. honestly, slightly disappointing as I don’t think it lived up to the prior two seasons but still I loved the characters and moments. It just didn’t have a ‘final feel’.

THIS IS US S6 // this is the show that makes me cry all the time, in a good way. I think it is a really clever, heartfelt drama series and I love the focus on family. It was ready for its final chapter and I liked seeing everything wrap up. It had less Jack, but I liked the focus on Rebecca.

STRANGER THINGS S4 // I was really into Stranger Things this year and whilst I wish certain characters got more screen time and development, I loved it. I do think volume 1 was better than volume 2. But the acting was really good, Caleb, Sadie and Gaten really stood out to me!

OBI-WAN KENOBI // To me, a really interesting extension of the world. I love the characters, and it brought back a lot of feelings. Kenobi and Anakin have such a compelling relationship. I like how this show brought some love back to the prequels.

MS MARVEL // (up to episode 5) I know the show hasn’t finished yet, but I wanted to talk about it. The visuals are stunning, the characters are lovable, the music is amazing and I REALLY enjoy it. Please watch it.

A very successful blogging time section. I felt like I was consistent (for me) with my content and most importantly, I enjoyed it a lot. In May, I hit 800 followers which feels surreal and I am so eternally grateful for everyone who has supported me. ❤️

    1. Stranger Things was soo good. I loved all the Max and Lucas content too– I love them both! 🥰 But the end!!!! 🥺
Ms Marvel has been great and I am curious to see how it all wraps up!! I hope we get more from these characters in the future! 💗

  1. Looks like you’ve had such a great variety to your reading (&tv watching) Sophie! Oh my gosh I LOVED Moon Knight, I think sometimes Marvel stuff never really clicks with me, but I loved that show & cannot wait for S2. Went into it with out much knowledge (only wanted to watch it really bc of Oscar Isaac, he’s a great actor) and loved his character (or shall I say characters?) a lot. 🥰

    1. Haha I have had a lot of different media lately. I’ve read a few adult contemporaries but they have all had very different vibes! 😂
I am a big fan of the mcu, but moon knight was something else. I love how phase 4 film/shows (content after the last avengers) have been different for marvel. It has felt refreshing!
I didn’t know much about moon knight going in either (I’m more a movie fan than the graphic novels) but I love that Oscar Isaac got you into it- and yes all his parts were amazing. The difference between each other showed his talent for sure! 😍

  2. I loved moon knight as well, that show was so different!! I’m also looking forward to watching ms marvel, glad to see you’re enjoying it!
Watching obi wan kenobi put me into a star wars brainrot HELP, and the actress for little Leia is so darn adorable, I can totally see her growing up to the Leia in ANH.
I’ve only read the first few chapters of dial a for aunties before I stopped reading and for some reason I haven’t gone back to the book, but those few chapters were the laugh-out-loud type of hilarious and plus the story seems so utterly chaotic, I think I’ll be giving it another try.
Thanks for the shoutout!! Hope you have an amazing month ahead, Sophie 💛

    1. Moon Knight was different and ahh.. I just loved it! 😍 Glad you were a fan too!
Ms Marvel is so fun. I hope you enjoy it!!
Haha I have had to resist the urge to watch the star wars prequels after obi wan. And the memes too, but they are soo good 😂
Leia was amazing in that show. Definitely adorable and strong, you can so see the traits of Fisher’s Leia in her I agree! 🥺
Dial a for aunties had a really engaging voice and plot, I love the aunties and chaotic nature of it. It makes for a quick read. I think you will enjoy the rest of the novel, if you liked the start!!
Of course, I loved your post 🥰❤️ thank youuu, wishing you a great month too!

  3. AHHH first of all, congrats on hitting 800 followers, Sophie!!🎉💗✨️
Always such a treat to know your thoughts, be it books or tv shows🥰 I’m so glad you’ve had such an amazing year so far!! I have to mention stranger things again here, I also think volume 1 was way better. The way volume 2 ended has left me feeling a little..unsatisfied and sad (I just cannot get over how the only person to mourn you know who was Dustin?? What about the rest of them? 😤) But, I guess I’m still curious to know what comes next. Moon Knight was incredible!! I loved it too (the soundtrack, the plot, the costumes and everything else?!)
Also, your features page is the cutest thing ever!! I love the graphics and the titles, so creative and pretty🌸
And it’s so sweet of you to feature my posts, thank you so much! It means a lot more than I can express through emojis 🥺💗💞

aw.. thank you, your comment are always the kindest 🥰 Yayyy, it has been all good so far, I hope the same is true for you! ✨
Yesss I love talking about Stranger Things 😂 but volume 2 did let me down!! It just doesn’t sit right and yessss dustin should not have been the only one to react to that moment… Like Steve, Lucas, Mike, c’mon and why did that moment even have to happen?!? What’s wrong with running away in that moment?!? Like the distraction was complete.
I will definitely be curious for season 5 and I hope for a more satisfying feeling.
Moon Knight was amazing, it was just a masterpiece altogether. I hope we see more from these characters (and soon)! 😍
yayyy… thank you sooo much 💗 it was fun to work on but definitely took too long 😅, so thank you for your kinds words 🥰
Of course, I love your posts and blog so much 💗💗 (haha emojis are almost perfect at sharing emotions) but honestly it is my pleasure to share your content ❤️

Stranger Things 4 was an experience and I love that we all go through it together!! I agree Caleb and Sadie were amazing– and the *scene* that was soo intense. I felt like I was feeling their emotions with them, it was amazing and distressing!!

And the only reason I didn’t like the book enough for it to become a new favorite 😭😭 THE LOVE INTEREST IS BASICALLY PERSONALITYLESS AND???? THE ENTIRE ROMANCE PLOTLINE IS JUST PRETTY UNREALISTIC AND POINTLESS???

EXCUSE ME while I silently proceed to add all the shows you mentioned to my watch list as well BECAUSE THEY SOUND NICE?! And shall come back later AND THANK YOU FOR THEM

Haha I feel like I have talked about the unbroken a lot but it stood out?!? It is a politic central novel but very interesting!!! Yayyy, thank youuuu 🥺

Ohhh yes thank you for agreeing with me on dial a for aunties because normally I can take or leave a romance, but this one grated on me a lot. It was the biggest downer and you are right, where was the personality!!! NOWHERE!! Why was the romance forced in?!?!? 😭

Glad I could provide some TV recs!! Some really fun ones and they aren’t too long to watch at all! Hope you love them!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH ANOUSHKA!! 💗❤️ Aww… You’re too kind and you are going to make me emotional 🥺❤️😭 thank you, I honestly don’t deserve you!! thank you for THIS comment 🥰

    1. ahhh please read the unbroken!! I love that you got a copy but so sorry to hear about the slump… Slumps are the worse (why, universe, why) but I feel like you need to be in the right mood for the unbroken as it is quite heavy. Hope you love it when the time is right 🥰

I was pretty lucky with the books I read and surprised by how many I got to in the end.
TJR is definitely an author worth checking out, the two I’ve read have been good.
How to kill your family has been so hyped… And it does have an uniqueness but I don’t think it was a very thrilling read. I’m still glad I read it though… Mostly 😂
Mirage was a really good young adult fantasy! Love the characters!
I’m sad about dial a for aunties but it is so many peoples favourites so i hope the same is true for you still!!

Ms Marvel has been grand! An amazing production and the characters 😍 I hope your mum is free to watch it soon (it is fun to watch with someone) ahh… Yes I love that we get family focus in this series, Kamala and her mum have a really interesting relationship. Hope you love ep. 5!!

turtle under ice was a good read, it is set out in poetry so if you like the poet x, the black flamingo or clap when you land… it is definitely worth checking out!
Daisy Jones And The Six is interesting because of the interview format!! I hope you enjoy it as much as TJR’s other books! ❤️

Yeah the plot pacing in hawkeye would have suited a film for sure!! Moon Knight was amazing, my favourite marvel show so far 😍😍

I’ve been wanting to read The Unbroken even more after reading a ton of C.L. Clark’s short stories recently…just waiting on my library hold!

Ohh and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who found the romance in Dial A for Aunties completely unnecessary and annoying.

  13. i am happy to learn you enjoyed far from the tree, although quite shocked you liked maya the best hahah i remember her narrative was the reason i was considering giving this book 4 stars because i disliked reading in her perspective so much lol. joaquin was my favorite, mostly because his perspective was so heartbreaking.

i’ve been hesitant to pick up beth o’leary since forever, mostly because her books’ premises were never really appealing. but the road trip sounded really interesting & the fact it gives you bridget jones vibes……. i’m now curious hahah i love bridget jones so much!

i finished dial A for aunties a few days ago and i agree that the romance was the most questionable part of the whole thing. even though i love romance in books and was scared to pick this up exactly because i knew there was going to be little to no romance, a part of me wishes that there was no romantic plot line at all!

i am currently watching hawkeye and taking wayyyyy too long to finish it, even though i really need to, so i can move on to other shows, such as moon knight! the fact you liked it so much makes me hopeful – tbh i am only watching it because of oscar isaac hahah.

as for stranger things, i do agree that volume I was better – volume II was so effing long and i still felt like there way too many unnecessary scenes and scenes that were missing lol. sadie and caleb’s acting during volume II took my breath away though, i had to pause for a second and remind myself they were just acting hahah.

tysm for the shoutout, sophie, hope you’re having a great july! sorry for the LONGEST COMMENT EVER btw!

    1. Far From The Tree was such a good backlist book. Haha Maya was the brattiest of the bunch tbf so I totally get that. I guess I liked how you got a feel of her personality on the page and it felt like a good messy young teenage. That or growing up on sitcoms and their love for unlikeable characters had too much power over me.
Joaquin did have the most heartbreaking POV and I did love how it just made him kinder.

Beth O’Leary is an author that my library loves so that made the decision for me. She does sweet, rom com contemporaries, and they do have a delightful factor about them. I like their character voices. They aren’t books I would rave about but I still enjoy.
The Road Trip does have little plot but Bridget Jones vibes, at least for me… I can’t pinpoint it, maybe the tone or the upper class characters included. It could be worth a shot but I would say Bridget Jones is better 😂

I know, I normally look for the romance as easily enjoyable in every novel but in dial a for aunties it was the worse part. I kinda wished for no romance too!!!

The last episode of hawkeye was the best so if that helps motivates you! Moon Knight was sooo good and different for marvel. Even if you don’t love the plot, Oscar Isaac’s character and acting is amazing 😍😍

Volume 2 of stranger things was just dragged out for the sake of it!! And yep, other scenes should have been there for sure!!
Caleb’s acting was that good. I have rewatched the Erika Help scene too many times but I am mesmerised!!

Of course, you are one of my favourite bloggers and I always love your posts Lais ❤️ thank you, I hope you are having a great July too.

  14. Thanks for mentioning my post! I’m glad you liked it. Also good that you liked “the library of the unwritten” as I hope to pick it up soon. I always try to branch out from reading fantasy during the summers, yet the last two contemporary books I’ve read has been somewhat if a let down and I’m reading to go back to magic.

Aw.. I totally get that, when I haven’t read fantasy in a while, I just miss it. Magic is just something special. Sorry to hear the contemporary books were a let down though! They can be the perfect summer reads when good.
