superache – conan gray | my first impressions 🥀🎥💔

Welcome back to my blog,

Conan Gray’s new album, superache, was released and I spontaneously decided to do a first impressions reaction to the songs. Obviously, I don’t know the songs very well yet, so don’t hold me to any of these opinions.

Anyways, enjoy as I react to this beautiful album.

(track one) MOVIES

🌹 “Falling in love with a damn fantasy
That’s so me, so me” 🌹

Everyone talks about ‘movie love’ at least once in their life. I am convinced anyone who has loved it, will hate it at some point too. It is a cycle, and the only thing I don’t know is which side you will end up sticking to. This song captured the entirety of this feeling.

Whilst I love the lyrics, the vocals stand out to me. They are strong compared to his gentle ones (both are great), and the layered voices repeating “movies” are soo catchy.

(track two) PEOPLE WATCHING

🌹 “I’m only looking just to live through you vicariously
I’ve never really been in love, not seriously” 🌹

This song has been out for a while, so I know it pretty well. It always gets stuck in my head, and I love the act of people-watching. This 100% has the perfect coffee shop atmosphere (not just saying it for the video), and I will always fall for that.

Plus, anyone who fits a 5 syllable word into a song nicely is a great songwriter.

(track three) DISASTER

🌹 “‘Cause the potential of us, it was keepin’ me up all night long
I left a text you won’t read all night long” 🌹

The single for release day but weirdly one of my least favourite songs. I love the video though… the intro, the drama, the red top, Conan.

I like the, what I am presuming are, low drumbeats, and I love the first line, “let me just set the scene”. In fact, I prefer the verses (and the bridge!!) over the chorus. Maybe that’s why I think it isn’t one of my favourites from this album.

(track four) BEST FRIEND

🌹 “‘Cause I hate, like, everyone except for you
Who else is gonna grocery shop with me at 2 A.M.?” 🌹

This song gave the album an explicit rating, and this one has more of an edge. I apparently don’t have any more of a sophisticated vocabulary to expand. I just mean it does not have the gentle vibe distinctive to Conan. Yet it’s unmistakably him.

It has a protective love embedded into its lyrics, yet the tone has a talkative nature. Even without multiple uses of the word ‘friend’, the whole aesthetic, tone, vibe, & feel of this song tells you this is about a friend’s love. The ‘why r u so annoying’, ‘ur an idiot’, to ‘you’re my soulmate’, ‘ily’ is captured in every fibre of the song.

(track five) ASTRONOMY

🌹 “A tale old as time, young love don’t last for life
And now I know, now I know
It’s time to go, it’s time to go” 🌹

Another single that’s been out a while, but I am not familiar with this song. I tried to be obsessed with it, but I just wasn’t.

It is very calm and peaceful. His voice is beautiful. I just think this song mostly stays at one level the whole time (until the end), and it means I kind of forget about it. Plus, I don’t feel connected to the lyrics.

(track six) YOURS

🌹 “The only thing that’s harder than sleepin’ alone
Is sleepin’ with your ghost” 🌹

This is such a sad and beautiful song. I love the peace, the piano, the long notes screaming out. You know this is a rainy window, piano ballad song in the best way.

The lyrics are so perfectly heartbreaking “all I really wanted was that look in your eyes// like you already know that I’m the love of your life.”. It touches on one-sided relationships but talks about what it is like to love them above any other emotion. It is honest. Both the feelings and by knowing what he needs for himself.

The bridge is a change of pace but in such an enticing way. In a ‘the reason you listen to the song’ way.

(track seven) JIGSAW

🌹 “Then I’d grab the kitchen scissors
And cut myself to slivers
For you” 🌹

This song is the opposite of ‘I am who I am by Lee Ryan’, and I love that. Truly. It talks about how easy it is to want to change to become what someone else wants for you.

His high notes in the chorus are perfect. “now I’m just a jigsaw”. That line. I will wait for it every time, in a very impatience manner.

The song also feels like a modern take on noughties angst. Very popular at the moment, and I liked Conan’s take on it. The ending is very abrupt, and I loved that too.

(track eight) FAMILY LINE

🌹 “I say, “They’re just the ones who gave me life”
But I truly am my parents’ child” 🌹

A fan favourite, I’m calling it! As titled, it is very much about family, and in Gray style, it is full of heartbreak, pain, joy, love, sadness, and even pride(??). From childhood memories to adult trauma. How family shapes you and your identity. Yes, this is all in one song.

It is beautiful, and I love the music in it. But what I love most is the feeling of it. Like I say, it is a story and a thousand emotions shared. The power.

Also, the bridge. the f**king bridge!!!!!

(track nine) SUMMER CHILD

🌹 “You don’t have to act like all you feel is mild
You don’t really love the Sun, it drives you wild” 🌹

Rule number 5 of how to be me, find the slowest, saddest song on the album, and let it become your favourite.

I love it even more with the happy imagery… summer, laugh, kiss. But there’s darkness, and this slow serenade is felt like a lush look into the pain of one person hiding it all. The song is very vocal-heavy and peaceful, but this is perfect.

I hope someone does a video/TikTok to this song with the happiest and summery clips they can find. Give me the hypocrisy & irony any day.

(track ten) FOOTNOTE

🌹 “You taught me a lesson, that love isn’t precious” 🌹

This song is a lyrical masterpiece. It is all about when they don’t love you back. Every line is another hit of emotion, and it maintains that throughout the whole song. At the end, it feels like you’ve been hit 50 times by emotions, only to realise it was all one emotion.

I have a soft spot for the whispered repetition of ‘please don’t forget me’ at the end.

(track eleven) MEMORIES

🌹 “I can’t be your friend, can’t be your lover
Can’t be the reason we hold back each other from falling in love” 🌹

I love this single. It has so much going for it, and it is easy to love. There are a lot of different parts, like the verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and bridge. Each has something distinct and uniquely catchy. Not to say it feels disconnected because it doesn’t at all.

It also feels so fun. Is that right to say? Even with the tragic lyrics, there is something fun about this song.

This will always be a song that ends too soon, but that end note is ✨p-e-r-f-e-c-t✨.

(track twelve) THE EXIT

🌹 “I can’t hate you for getting everything we wanted
I just thought that I would be a part of it” 🌹

The chorus is the star. The music constantly changes throughout this song, from very slow to faster to silent. It keeps you paying attention. It makes it an enjoyable, easy-listen piece, but I have no strong emotional attachment.
