The First Quarterly Update Of 2022 | reading some new ‘soft favourites’ and a disappointing new release

🧣 JANUARY TO MARCH 🌷

2022 has begun. I’m still not ready yet New Year’s Day feels so long ago.

*grapples around the concept of time*

Anyway, welcome to a wrap up of sorts. Looking back at my books, TV series and blog posts from the last few months.

I focused on the oldest books on my shelf… and you can tell. But, then I did branch out a bit as I don’t think most YA books are my thing anymore.

soft favourites

QUEENIE BY CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS // I knew this was popular, and I knew I wanted to read it but still, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Perfect if looking for messy, lovable characters with an engaging voice, focus on friendship, a complex relationship with sex and a journey into healing yourself. I loved it.

THE JASMINE THRONE BY TASHA SURI // review soon, but for now, I will say I am impressed and in love with Malini.

MORE HAPPY THAN NOT BY ADAM SILVERA // This book shocked me, made me emotional and gave a beautiful and realistic message. I hope more and more people pick up this book to match the hype of They Both Die At The End. Want to check out my review?

great books to read

HABEN (A MEMOIR) BY HABEN GIRMA // It was an educational, entertaining read that allowed you to experience the world from a different point of view. My favourite part was how Haben was determined and career-driven. I enjoyed existing in that mindset.

AMARI AND THE NIGHT BROTHERS BY B. B. ALSTON // This had the perfect middle-grade fantasy charm. A lot of heart, fun, adventure, and magic.

INDIAN HORSE BY RICHARD WAGAMESE // the use of storytelling was great. It focused on small details and used them to transpire big things felt really powerful. It is a heartbreaking story but one that needs to be told.

FINDING HOME VOLUME 1 & 2 BY HARI CONNER // the aesthetics and core of the story were beautiful. Want to check out my review?

only good

THE INFERNAL DEVICES BY CASSANDRA CLARE // current read: clockwork princess // “Jem is my great sin” sums up the strength of this series, and describing Will as handsome on every page is apparently a pet peeve of mine. Review soon.

ILLUMINAE BY AMIE KAUFMAN & JAY KRISTOFF // the novelty of all pages being multimedia wore off on me eventually. AIDAN entirely carried the book for me.

THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END BY ADAM SILVERA // I wished I had been moved to tears. Want to check out my review?

YOU ASKED FOR PERFECT BY LAURA SILVERMAN // I felt anxious about school after reading this book. I no longer attend school… I stopped 5 years ago.

EMPRESS & ANIYA BY CANDICE CARTY-WILLIAMS // it was too short to enjoy and rate. It wasn’t anything terrible, just nothing grand.

ODD AND THE FROST GIANTS BY NEIL GAIMAN // this was a reread as I never saw the illustrations the first time. I don’t know why I was so determined to experience this story again. It wasn’t bad, just an average pleasant book that I didn’t need to read twice.

CITY OF CIRCLES BY JESS RICHARDS // this was actually a unique fantasy. Intentionally slow-paced whilst exploring grief through magical realism. The romance was not for me at all, and to an extent, I’d even say unnecessary. I think ultimately the book just wasn’t my cup of tea, but I still loved the writing and distinct nature of it.

KISS & TELL BY ADIB KHORRAM // the title disappointment. Perhaps unfair due to my high expectations, but sadly it fell short on a few things. Thankfully there were some strong elements of it too. Check out my strengths and weaknesses list below…

❌ Hunter was complex, but I found him ever so slightly unlikeable as well.
❌ The secondary characters felt underdeveloped. I didn’t feel like a bond was established between them and Hunter. In fact, the novel really had too many relationships and not enough time.
❌ I felt like there were moments when I could forget there were in a boyband. It was not a big topic in the novel.
❌ The conclusion/resolution was far too rushed. Even felt a little cut short.
✅ One character stood out for me… Kaivan. He was kind, likeable and faced his flaws well. Plus, I would love to hear his band’s music. I get why he wasn’t the main character, but part of me still wishes he was the main character.
✅ The exploration of media, in particular being queer in the spotlight, was GREAT. From viewing queer relationships with a heteronormative lens, bottom-shaming, white privilege, sex positivity and ‘how to be a respectable gay in the spotlight’. The discussions were by far the strength for me… the nuances and breadth of topics. It is worth the read to see these points being made.

THIS IS GOING TO HURT // I felt so exhausted just from watching it. It was an un-glamorised look into being a doctor. It was so important to see. As if you can ever say it enough, thank you, NHS.

THE TOURIST // the characters made this show. They were all not the typical ones and improved the mystery journey. One weird episode but overall a decent series.

BAD BUDDY // it was great for a drama, romance series. It had stunning chemistry between the characters, healthy representation and lovable side characters.

EUPHORIA S2 // I actually really enjoyed this season, although I am aware it is open to a LOT of fair criticism. I really do think its success is down to it being such a conversation piece… and the filming style… and the music… and Zendaya.

ONLY MURDERERS IN THE BUILDING // I did enjoy aspects, and the comedy led approach was fun. But, I struggled to care about anything character/plot-wise.

WANDAVISION // this was really good and genuinely nice to see Marvel tackle something different.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLIDER // social media made me underestimate this one. IT WAS SOOO GOOD! I honestly loved it a lot!

LOKI // how was Loki still a side character??!?! Not a big fan of Sylvie or the plot to be honest. My highlight was Richard E Grant’s Loki. The Loki I had been waiting for forever.

WHAT IF? // Some episodes were better than others… I liked how it was open to riskier plots that don’t need satisfying endings. Those episodes were my favourite.

PAM & TOMMY // The strongest moments of the series were when the focus was on Pam. The rest was more questionable. It will be interesting to see Pam’s documentary later on. Sebastian Stan’s smile was almost too innocent for this show.

A slightly rocky start to blogging this year. Thankfully, March has been more successful.

I dedicated some time to revamping my ‘The Me & Music Tag‘ to make the post more “user-friendly”. With a new icon, new rules and new graphics, all at the top of the post. I feel better for doing it. It was probably too late, but at least I know I’ve done it.

I got a letterboxd account. If you have it and want to share it, let me know. I would love some people to follow 👀

What I did manage to post…

from the community…

24hr.YABookBlog talked about book blogging in the era of BookTok. It was a really interesting, relevant, well-written discussion that I loved reading and imagine lots of other people would as well.

Kaya @ A Fictional Bookworm gives the perfect starter recs to get into the fantasy genre. I loved the idea and Kaya always has a way of talking about book recs that makes you want to read them ASAP.

Caro @ bookcheshirecat shares a giant list of middle-grade books she wants to read. It is perfect for finding lots of different recommendations and celebrating the joy of middle-grade novels.

Suhani @ Random Reader’s Rambles talks about favourite books but with a twist… the things not to like in them. It was a fabulous read… full of personality, art and fun. You need to check it out.

Lais @ The Bookish Skies shares book recs based on the sour album. An aesthetically beautiful post that was a joy to read. I loved Lais’ blogging voice, and all the interesting book recs which I don’t see mentioned a lot in the community.

Katja @ Life and Other Disasters talks about The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake and whether you should read it. It made my desire to read the book quadruple. I loved how it was a well-considered review.

Sahi @ My World of Books does The Bookish Academy Awards 2022. I loved this post… firstly, it was so fun and creative. Then secondly, it was full of adult fantasy recs (and more). Please read it.

Sofia @ Bookish Wanderess talks about the books she wishes to read for the first time again and I loved reading her list. It made me want to read all the books or reminisce on my own favourites.

Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books gives 10 tips on how to write SEO-optimized posts. Perfectly displayed and full of great advice. Check it out.

Maria @ The Character Study shares where to buy books as an international reader. Such a great resource full of bookshops to try out.

Sofi @ A Book. A Thought. discusses different review structures including her own new style. It was so interesting and it made me think about my favourite review structure too.

May @ Forever and Everly completed a reading experiment by disconnecting from social media. It was so increasing to see how this affected her reading. You need to read it.

Ashmita @ The Fictional Journal shared a list of specific favourite tropes and it was glorious. I loved the setup of this post and, of course, all the tropes. A masterpiece.

How has your reading been going this year? Any new favourites or disappointments? Have you enjoyed the marvel shows?

  1. Thank you for the shoutout .. and those are some amazing posts you’ve shared… I missed a few of them before, so glad to read them now 😊😊😊

  2. I didn’t enjoy Loki much either (I didn’t like Sylvie’s character much too!) Unpopular opinion but I hated the loki-sylvie romance, they should’ve just remained chaotic best friends. I started euphoria and then stopped because it was totally not my kind of thing lol.
Hope u have a great month ahead!!

    1. Loki was such a disappointment really. Some elements I liked but overall not for me. I am hoping I like Sylvie more in s2 but I’m not holding my breath. Chaotic best friends sounds better to me!!
Haha I can’t totally see how Euphoria isn’t for everyone. 😅
Thank you Jan!! ❤️ I hope you do too 🥰

  3. omg thank you so much for mentioning my post🥺💜 and ahhh jem is my great sin tbh i love him so much (too much). and wandavision is SO GOOD!!! and so is falcon and the winter soldier! i wish loki had been done better because it felt so lost in what it was trying to do…like i wasn’t a fan of all the extra stuff haha.

    1. Of course Kaya! I loved it!! 💕💕 haha Jem is one of the most precious characters… I want him in all the scenes!! WandaVision was so cool… Scarlet Witch is stunning!!!! I feel like Loki had a lot of potential but the plot didn’t fit OG Loki. I hope s2 is better!! 🤞

  5. I had totally forgotten about Pam & Tommy! I’ve been wanting to watch it so thanks for reminding me. You managed to read a lot this month, which is amazing. I’ll be waiting for that The Infernal Devices review as that’s my favourite Shadowhunters series and it holds a special place in my heart! Thank you for including my post in here, it’s always really nice to see that people enjoy what I write 💕

    1. haha yay… I really hope you end up enjoying Pam & Tommy!! It was definitely an interesting watch!!
Thank youuuu, these were my books over 3 month… I don’t think I could ever read that much in a month (I wish though 😂)! I’m glad you really love The Infernal Devices… I love Jem! 😍
Of course, it was such a great post. Thank you for writing it!! 💕💕

  6. ahhh yes wandavision was so fun to watch!! I was a teensy bit underwhelmed with the final episode but I still enjoyed it so much!! I especially loved the first few episodes, those really messed with my mind 😂😂😂.
Loki had one of the most unsatisfactory endings of any show I’ve ever watched :(( it was an absolute train wreck in my opinion haha 😂😂I did enjoy Loki’s character though (and all the different versions of him too 😉) but I hated sylvie’s character, she was SO SO ANNOYING ARGHH. And the romance felt so terribly one-sided too?? Hoping season two will be better 🤞🤞
AND AHHH THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR MENTIONING MY POST💖💖💖🥺🥺🥺 it absolutely made my day so thank youu !!😭❤️❤️
Loved this post so much!! :)))

    1. WandaVision was a blast and so unique. Plus, heartbreaking!! I love Scarlet Witch!! I get what you mean about the finale though… it was almost a little rushed!! I can’t imagine seeing those first episodes without any idea what was going on (I’d seen a few spoilers 😅) amazing though!!
I know…. Loki was underwhelming and the ending was a bit like ‘oh’ 😂 I did enjoy seeing the other Lokis… Classic Loki and Kid Loki especially (they should have had individual episodes really!!) Yeah, you are right the romance did feel one-sided!! I hope s2 will be better too!! 🤞
Of course, I loved your post Suhani!! 💕💕 aw.. yay!! ❤️❤️❤️ Stunning post!!
      Thank youuuuu!!

  7. Okay so firstly I just have to say I was terrified that your 2022 debut disappointment was going to be This Woven Kingdom as I know you preordered that one. I’m glad it wasn’t the one!! Still need to read my copy. I didn’t realise you’d read Amari either. Glad you enjoyed it. I’m curious to see where the series will go next. And I loved that even the elevators had personalities 😅
I so can’t wait to finally read Jasmine Throne sometime. Glad to see you enjoyed Queenie too. I think the author has another book out sometime this year?? I can’t remember what the name was or what it was about but I remember seeing something by the author in a Waterstones email.

I’ll have to check This Is Going To Hurt out sometime. Wasn’t really sure what it would be like but I was curious after seeing the book everywhere. I keep seeing Euphoria mentioned everywhere atm too but I don’t even know what that’s about 🙈 I have seen The Tourist though and enjoyed it. Even though it was kinda OTT it worked which is rare for me. I haven’t seen any of the Marvel shows 🙈 I don’t think I even know where to start as there are so many!!

Is Letterboxd a bit like Goodreads for films? Never seen it before. And your posts have been excellent so far this year!! Really loved hearing your thoughts on the Jade books ❤❤ and learning about your writing. I still need to start posting properly 🙈

    1. Aww.. Well I am glad it wasn’t this woven kingdom too. I can’t wait to pick it up… Hopefully soon!! 🤞🏻 Fingers crossed we both love it!
I kept meaning to mention I read Amari as I know you liked it… Me too!! Such a cool world. Haha yes so many fun aspects like that. Loved it! 😍
I so hope you enjoy The Jasmine Throne as well!
I believe Candice does have a new book out soon… Was it people person?!? I think it had a waterstones exclusive edition. I don’t know the premise either but I’m definitely going to read it at some point!! 😍
This is Going To Hurt was an unique show as it was hard to watch at times as it shows how hard and thankless their work is, but I think effective. It focused on his personal life too.
Euphoria is a strange one. Quite a dark and sometimes unrealistic teen show. I think you love it or hate it though.
Haha glad the tourist worked for you. It was quite a good watch and different 😂
There are a lot of marvel shows now 😅… I think on disney plus they have them lined up in chronological order so they do it for you. I watched them in release date order (the order I wrote them down here) and it worked well.

Yeah letterboxd is essentially goodreads for films… Probably less serious reviews as typically only a sentence or two. I really like it… Interesting to see what people think and it helps me remember what I’ve watched as well 😂
Aww… Thank you soooo much Charlotte. All your support means the world ❤️ thank you, thank you 🥰 aw.. I look forward to more of your posts whenever you are ready 💚

      1. I’m hoping to read it soon too. And yes, hopefully 🤞
Yeah it was fun. I loved how it managed to mash together magic, spying & prejudice too.
        Thank you.
I think so?? I just looked and I’m guessing it was that one. I do know Taylor Jenkin Reids one is about tennis so at least I remembered that 🙈 ooh speaking of their exclusive editions have you seen there’s one of Foul Lady Fortune. From the pictures I’m guessing it at least has a hidden cover.
It’s definitely good if it’s a true reflection of how hard it can sometimes be. He has a few books our now I think. I’ll try to watch the first episode with my mum sometime as it seems like the sort of show she’ll enjoy.
Ah right. I’ll have to find out what it’s like sometime then and let you know.
Very random at times 😂 omg and I so wanted to swap the boyfriend.
Ah right I’ll have to look sometime then. Don’t Netflix have some too? Or have they all moved over now? First up I should definitely watch the movie (was it five rings?) though. Can’t believe I still haven’t seen that. BTW speaking of Disney Plus have you ever seen the help?

Ooh maybe I should check it out sometime then, especially as I go the cinema fairly regularly. Sticking to just two lines or so is hard though. How would I express my disappointment with the Gucci film like that? 😂😂
It’s true, your posts are always interesting to read (:
Aww thank you ❤❤ I’ll hopefully get at least one posted sometime this month. Just want to get reading again first as I’ve stopped over the last week or so 😔

        1. Yay!!
It definitely brought in a lot of elements in a really nicely balanced way!!
It sounds good and I’ve seen good reviews. oh yeah, I had seen Reid’s new one… Tennis is a different direction but I’d read it still!! I had seen the exclusive Foul Lady Fortune… the hidden cover does look cool and just a vibrant pink with themes of death.
It appears like a good reflection to me, obviously never having been a junior doctor I can’t comment loads but I thought it was great. He does I believe. Ohh.. I hope you both like the show then.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Euphoria!
I know, the boyfriend was soo annoying!!!
Netflix used to have some marvel shows but I think they are only on Disney plus now. Quite a recent change though. Yeah, ten rings, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings. So gooood!
I haven’t seen the help. It never particularly appealed to me, have you then??

It is definitely a good app… you don’t have to stick to two lines. You can write as much as you like I think, just most people don’t. haha, disappointments are easy to talk about 😂
          Thank youuu 🥺💕💕
aww… best of luck with it all 🥰🥰 I hope it goes well!!

          1. Thats good!!
I like the sound of it. Still haven’t read anything by her though 🙈 I love it 😍😍 pink is quite unusual for that sort of cover too.
Thats good then. And thank you. I’ll let you know when I see it.
I’ll let you know when I see that too then!!
Glad it wasn’t just me!! No idea why she was with him.
That wouldn’t surprise me as they own Marvel now. I can’t believe I still haven’t seen it 🙈 I finally did a few weeks ago after telling myself I’d watch it for years. I really enjoyed it. Deals with important issues & made me so angry at times yet also managed to have a couple of funny moments.

Ah right. And you say that but I always struggle with reviewing books I don’t like. I know some people love tearing into them but I end up feeling guilty. But I am honest about my dislikes still.
            Thank you 💗💗

            1. I do think you will like These Violent Delights 😍
              Thank youuu 💜❤️
No, I sadly think it was down to low self esteem that she stayed with him! 😔
Haha 😂 I’m glad you enjoyed it and it made you feel a mix of emotions… It might be worth a shot then. Thank you for the rec! 🥰

I get that… I’m not great at rant reviews. But I feel like when I don’t love a book… I have more diversity of thoughts like I didn’t enjoyed this aspect because etc. But when I love a bit I feel very repetitive in my thoughts like this was great and so was this 😅 definitely important to be honest though ❤️ you do great reviews!!

              Liked by 1 person

              1. Fingers crossed 🤞
Yeah I think so too. Honestly can’t see a single other reason she’d be with him.
Let me know if you do ever end up watching it.
Yeah I totally get that. It can be hard to say what you love without getting repetitive. Especially when you also have to stay vague to avoid spoilers.
Aww thanks 💗💗 so do you.

  9. sophie, i love the layout of this post!!!!! i do agree that is pretty crazy we are already in april, although considering how hard 2022 has already been, i am welcoming the fact time is speeding up and hopefully that means this year will end soon hahah

hahah it is so interesting you asked for perfect left you feeling anxious! it was actually the opposite for me. i was surprised by how, even though the book centered on anxiety, it didn’t leave *me* feeling anxious, which is pretty rare lol. as for your thoughts on kiss & tell….. man, i am not feeling great about this one now. i didn’t like the most recent book i read by adib khorram which was darius the great deserves better, so i really am not 100% certain i do enjoy his writing style as much as i told myself i did.

i am glad you enjoyed the falcon and the winter soldier so much! i agree completely, it is very underrated for how good it is!! loki was fun as i was watching it, but the more i think about it, the less sense it makes lol.

thanks for the shoutout btw!!!! i was quite proud of that post heheh so i am glad you enjoyed it too!

hope you’re having a great april!

    1. thank you soo much Lais! 💖 Time is always moving so fast. I’m sorry to hear 2022 has been hard, I certainly hope it improves for you and send you lots of best wishes 💕💕

haha that is funny that we felt the opposite in terms of anxiety for you asked for perfect. I don’t know if it was the exam pressure or decisions but I was very tense. Glad it was a rare surprise that left you anxiety-free though!
I was so sad about kiss & tell but I’ve seen other people loving it still. I did enjoy darius the great deserves better, so it could be a sign kiss & tell will work better for you. But I definitely agree how this new reading experience has made me reevaluate if adib khorram is a fave author for me. I do hope you enjoy kiss & tell if you decide to check it out though.

I was so glad the falcon and the winter soldier was as good as it was. I enjoyed the conversations brought up and the character development. It was nice to see both the title characters have more lines for once, haha! Loki did have fun aspects but the plot didn’t really work for me. Still, I’m intrigued to see what s2 brings.

Of course and you definitely should be proud of that post… it was amazing!! 💕💕

Thank you, wishing you the best for April too!

  10. My reading has been pretty good and I’ve read some great books! I thought I’d go into a big slump in March but The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy got me out of it so easily. As for shows, I’ve been bingeing Kdramas way too much and I need to stop haha. Hope you have a great April!

haha shows can be dangerously addictive. I’m excited to step into the world of Kdramas though!

  11. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who didn’t enjoy Loki! It annoyed me so much that he got shoved to the side in his own show and it just wasn’t what the trailers promised at all. I might watch season 2, but I’ll probably wait to see what other people say about it when it comes out.

    1. I know Loki was a bit frustrating to watch at times (I’m glad I’m not alone in this too)… definitely a lot of untouched potential… like our loki have plenty to give!! Tbf, waiting to see what people think is a good idea. I really hope it is better though!! 🤞

  12. I’m so happy to see you liked More Happy Than Not, I feel like not that many people have read that book and it makes me a bit sad. I was so surprised by it, too! And You Asked For Perfect also made me anxious about school even though I haven’t had school in so many years, now 😂😂 I have Kiss & Tell on my TBR, excited to read it! 🙂

You Asked For Perfect was definitely powerful in transferring emotions 🤣🤣

Also, I’m so happy you enjoyed Queenie, I feel like it’s a popular book but a lot of people end up disliking it and I thought it was really good. The character development was incredible and my favorite part of the book.

I so agree, Queenie has the numbers but I know a lot of people didn’t enjoy it because of Queenie’s character. I found her to be a really engaging protagonist and her development was GREAT. I’m so glad I finally picked it up, and that you enjoyed it too 😍
