Kaleb, falsely accused of assassinating the former maharani, needs it to clear his name. And Riya, the runaway sibling who cut all family ties, wants the Key to prove her loyalty to the rebels who took her in.

The Lost Dreamer by Lizz Huerta

  • the new king wants to bring the Dreamers to an end
  • another main character discovers her life has been a lie and searches for answers

A stunning YA fantasy inspired by ancient Mesoamerica, this gripping debut introduces us to a lineage of seers defiantly resisting the shifting patriarchal state that would see them destroyed—perfect for fans of Tomi Adeyemi and Sabaa Tahir.

Indir is a Dreamer, descended from a long line of seers; able to see beyond reality, she carries the rare gift of Dreaming truth. But when the beloved king dies, his son has no respect for this time-honored tradition. King Alcan wants an opportunity to bring the Dreamers to a permanent end—an opportunity Indir will give him if he discovers the two secrets she is struggling to keep. As violent change shakes Indir’s world to its core, she is forced to make an impossible choice: fight for her home or fight to survive.

Saya is a seer, but not a Dreamer—she has never been formally trained. Her mother exploits her daughter’s gift, passing it off as her own as they travel from village to village, never staying in one place too long. Almost as if they’re running from something. Almost as if they’re being hunted. When Saya loses the necklace she’s worn since birth, she discovers that seeing isn’t her only gift—and begins to suspect that everything she knows about her life has been a carefully-constructed lie. As she comes to distrust the only family she’s ever known, Saya will do what she’s never done before, go where she’s never been, and risk it all in the search of answers.

With a detailed, supernaturally-charged setting and topical themes of patriarchal power and female strength, Lizz Huerta’s The Lost Dreamer brings an ancient world to life, mirroring the challenges of our modern one.

Her best friend, Cherish Whitman, adopted by a wealthy white family, is something Farrah likes to call WGS–White Girl Spoiled. With Brianne and Jerry Whitman as parents, Cherish is given the kind of adoration and coddling that even upper-class Black parents can’t seem to afford–and it creates a dissonance in her best friend that Farrah can exploit. When her own family is unexpectedly confronted with foreclosure, the calculating Farrah is determined to reassert the control she’s convinced she’s always had over her life by staying with Cherish, the only person she loves–even when she hates her.

A troubled Farrah manipulates her way further into the Whitman family but the longer she stays, the more her own parents suggest that something is wrong in the Whitman house. She might trust them–if they didn’t think something was wrong with Farrah, too. As strange things start happening at the Whitman household–debilitating illnesses, upsetting fever dreams, an inexplicable tension with Cherish’s hothead boyfriend, and a strange journal that seems to keep track of what is happening to Farrah–it’s nothing she can’t handle. But soon everything begins to unravel when the Whitmans invite Farrah closer, and it’s anyone’s guess who is really in control.

Told in Farrah’s chilling, unforgettable voice and weaving in searing commentary on race and class, this slow-burn social horror will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page.

Hunter never expected to be a boy band star, but, well, here he is. He and his band Kiss & Tell are on their first major tour of North America, playing arenas all over the United States and Canada (and getting covered by the gossipy press all over North America as well). But Hunter isn’t really sure what being the perfect queer kid even means. Does it mean dressing up in whatever The Label tells him to wear for photo shoots and pretending never to have sex? (Unfortunately, yes.) Does it mean finding community among the queer kids at the meet-and-greets after K&T’s shows? (Fortunately, yes.) Does it include a new relationship with Kaivan, the star of the band opening for K&T on tour? (He hopes so.) But when The Label finds out about Hunter and Kaivan, it spells trouble—for their relationship, for the perfect gay boy Hunter plays for the cameras, and, most importantly, for Hunter himself.

There’s stoner-jock Tyler Montana, who might be just as interested in Fabiola as he is in Quique; straight-laced senior class president, Ziggy Jackson; and Manny Zuniga, who keeps looking at Quique like he’s carne asada fresh off the grill. With all these choices, Quique is sure to forget about Saleem in no time.

But as the summer heats up and his deep-seated fears and anxieties boil over, Quique soon realizes that getting over one guy by getting under a bunch of others may not have been the best laid plan and living his truth can come at a high cost.

  • If Mars, can’t find it, it will eat him alive !!!

SYNOPSIS:

From Ryan La Sala, the wildly popular author of Reverie, comes a twisted and tantalizing horror novel set amidst the bucolic splendor of a secluded summer retreat.

Mars has always been the lesser twin, the shadow to his sister Caroline’s radiance. But when Caroline dies under horrific circumstances, Mars is propelled to learn all he can about his once-inseparable sister who’d grown tragically distant.

Mars’s genderfluidity means he’s often excluded from the traditions — and expectations — of his politically-connected family. This includes attendance at the prestigious Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy where his sister poured so much of her time. But with his grief still fresh, he insists on attending in her place.

What Mars finds is a bucolic fairytale not meant for him. Folksy charm and sun-drenched festivities camouflage old-fashioned gender roles and a toxic preparatory rigor. Mars seeks out his sister’s old friends: a group of girls dubbed the Honeys, named for the beehives they maintain behind their cabin. They are beautiful and terrifying — and Mars is certain they’re connected to Caroline’s death.

But the longer he stays at Aspen, the more the sweet mountain breezes give way to hints of decay. Mars’s memories begin to falter, bleached beneath the relentless summer sun. Something is hunting him in broad daylight, toying with his mind. If Mars can’t find it soon, it will eat him alive.

Seventeen-year-old Yamilet Flores prefers drawing attention for her killer eyeliner, not for being the new kid at a mostly white, very rich, Catholic school. But at least here no one knows she’s gay, and Yami intends to keep it that way. After being outed by her crush and ex-best friend, she could use the fresh start.

At Slayton Catholic, Yami has new priorities: make her mom proud, keep her brother out of trouble, and most importantly, don’t fall in love. Granted, she’s never been great at any of those things, but that’s a problem for Future Yami.

The thing is, it’s hard to fake being straight when Bo, the only openly queer girl at school, is so annoyingly perfect. And talented. And confident. And cute. So cute. Yami isn’t sure if she likes Bo or if she’s just jealous of her unapologetic nature. Either way, she isn’t ready to make the same mistake again. If word got to her mom, she could face a lot worse than rejection.

  3. Aaah, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS LIST SOPHIE!!! As someone who NEVER keeps track of new releases and is very unorganised in general, this was so, so helpful for me! I’ve heard about some of these books (Only A Monster), but so many of these i’ve never heard of before, but they sound amazing! And I also LOVE how you added bullet points for all the reasons you want to read them, all of your post formats are always THE BEST! i loved reading this so much!! ❤❤

  4. i am so thankful for the amazing people that have been sharing anticipated releases, because i feel like this year, i’ve been the worst at keeping up with them! i can only think of one title coming up in 2022 that i am super excited for and it’s the new book by robin roe. i don’t think we have a cover yet but according to goodreads, it’s called a dark room etiquette and to be honest, it sounds SUPER triggering lmao but i still want to read because robin roe!!! she’s the author of a list of cages and i’ve been waiting for her to release something else since i read that one.

the cover for a far wilder magic is so beautiful and looks like something straight out of a fairytale! while i am not a fan of fantasy, i have to admit that the covers for 2022 fantasy releases are absolutely kicking ass: a magic steeped in poison and this vicious grace are also stunning!

i am super excited for all my rage as well! i have read sabaa tahir and i am looking forward to see how she does with contemporary. i love the idea of multiple POV and different generations!

thank you so much for compiling this amazing list, sophie! i will definitely be referencing it as i organize my 2022 reading plans!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It has only been recently that I’ve looked into the 2022 releases but the people who are up to date with weekly releases and have spreadsheets of all the information have a lot of power and devotion 🤣 I hadn’t heard of Dark Room Etiquette before now, I would not have expected that premise at all. It sounds so different and compelling, it would be interesting to see how it all ends up. aw… I hope you are able to read it safely ❤ and you end up loving it though.

I love the cover for Far Wilder Magic too, YA fantasy always has some of the best covers. It looks very folksy and fairytale-like for sure, quite different from the rest too. A Magic Steeped in Poison is so colourful and the sequel cover matches perfectly !! I have a soft spot for This Vicious Grace's cover I'll admit, it reminds me of something but I'm not sure. It looks like a modern take on something vintage which I love.

All My Rage is going to be interesting. I was full-on expecting an adult fantasy from Sabaa so this multi-generational contemporary really has my interest. Me too !! I think her writing will suit it though.

ahh… thank you SO much for reading Lais !! 💕 So, so happy it could be helpful to you and wishing you lots of great 2022 reads!! 💕

  5. Before I forget your mention of an amusement park for the last book reminded me of another adult (I think??) book out this year. I think its called Hide & Seek and its definitely by Kiersten White. Its about a sinister hide & seek style contest in a deserted amusement park. Anyway onto YA books…

You’ll be very surprised (or not 🤣🤣) to hear that all of your fantasy books are already on my tbr whilst only four of the non fantasy ones are

Starting with fantasy I’m most excited for over half of the ones you mentioned 😅 most are even on my most anticipated list. And I’ve preordered four of them. How was the cover not one of your reasons for Magic Steeped In Poison 😍😍 when the UK one inevitably ends up different I’ll be devastated. I’m so intrigued by the tea magic concept though. And I just adore the sound of so many of those books. I need them now!!
Other fantasy books I know of are Nightrender by Jodi Meadows which was a last minute find of mine, Gallant, Bright Ruined Things & Edgewood although I’m not 100% thats YA. Either way it sounds fantastic.

I’m adding a couple of the others to my list but the one I’m most excited about is All My Rage. This year I definitely have to get An Ember In The Ashes read. Her new release sounds like it’ll be devastating though. And The Indian Wedding one has such a stunning cover 😍😍 sounds like a fun read too!!
Other non fantasy 2022 releases I’m most interested in are Drowning Summer (kind of, it has supernatural elements but it’s not full blown fantasy at least), The Red Palace which could be YA or adult but sounds amazing either way (I really need to look into this more, I never take in the target audience 😅), These Deadly Games & Trigger. I’ve just realised I have no YA non mystery contemporaries to share 🤔 so much for my efforts to read more of them 🙈🙈

I hope you get to read & love all of these 💗💗💗

    1. Oohh I hadn’t heard of Hide but it sounds very dark and interesting. I actually love that setting for that type of book. So interesting, thank you 🥰

Haha all the fantasy books!! Some absolutely amazing YA fantasy coming out and those covers 😍😍
Haha I clearly have a good eye for some of the fantasies 😂 I love that we are both so excited for them all. Hopefully they will be as amazing as they sound!
I know Magic Steeped in Poison is an amazing cover!! The bright pink 😍😍 the sequel matches so well too! I know I hope the UK doesn’t change it! It is a really unique premise!!
I actually thought Gallant was adult for some reason 😅
I love the sound of Nightrender, it has a very classic feel about it. Bright Ruined Things sounds different which I love. Love the sound of the character mix in Edgewood. Thank youuu ❤️

All My Rage sounds really good and really different to what I expected from Tahir. Very emotional like you say!
My Sister’s Big Fat Indian Wedding sounds so fun!!
I’ve seen the Red Palace around!! I need to look into it more. These Deadly Games and Trigger as well. Hope you end up loving them!
Oohh the drowning summer sounds really good. I would definitely read that!! Thank you!
Haha well I know from experience I don’t always prioritise new genres I want to try out over the large backlist of books for genres that I love 😂

Thank you so much!! I hope you do too 🥰🥰

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The settings what appeals to me most too. I’d love to read more books set in abandoned amusement parks.

Fantasy is my weakness 😅 and yes the covers are amazing. Picking a top ten this year is going to be hard cover wise!!
Fingers crossed. Then we can fangirl together!! I can’t believe how many incredible sounding books are coming out this year.
Yes I love how well they go together 😍😍 thinking about it maybe they’ll stick to it as both are already revealed. Hopefully. I’ve already had two cover changes on books I love this year. Although, to be fair, both look stunning still.
Oh it might be? I don’t really know tbh. Next year when I do my list I’ll have to look at the genre labels 😂
Yes it sounds incredible. Can’t believe it’s out this month & I’ve literally only just learnt about it. Tbh if it sounds dark & magical it seems to end up on my high priority tbr 😂 although not in a gory way – I go more for the beautiful but dark vibes in general.

I think its going to be a hard but compelling read!!
Tbh I love the sound of all three of the authors books. Can’t believe I haven’t read any yet. Thank you.
It’s by one of the two authors of my favourite book of last year too so that’s only added to my excitement.
Yeah same. Although I just feel like I get to nothing in general. There are some bagklist books that I majorly need to read this year though. Ooh and I finally have a contemporary recommendation for you – Love Radio!!

        Thank you 🥰🥰

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Yeah so much potential in abandoned amusement parks!!

Haha it is going to be hard picking favourite covers. I don’t envy that job but I look forward to seeing yours!!
Yes I can’t wait to talk about them all, once read, with you! 🥰
Yeah it would be so good if they stay the same 😍 aww.. I’m glad the changes were still nice, what books were they if you remember?
I’m honestly not sure either so I may be wrong.
I know, definitely been a hidden book so far!! Haha dark, beautiful & magical is always great so I don’t blame you 😍

Definitely! Me too, I would love to read all her books!
Ahh.. Of course, that’s amazing 😍😍
          Aww.. Maybe this year then!
There are a lot of backlist books I need to read too. My TBR is never ending 😅
Oohh thank you…. Love Radio sounds amazing. I think the premise and sound of characters. Plus it was compared to the sun is also a star which I loved. Thank you so much 🥰

          Liked by 1 person

          1. The setting works for loads of genres too.

Yeah it’s definitely going to be a challenge, especially as more book covers are revealed too.
It’ll be so interesting to compare thoughts though. Daughter Of The Moon Goddess & Girl Beneath The Sea. Babel has different covers I’ve since realised too although both are very similar. Oh and Ivory Key both are lovely but very different.
Glad it’s not just me!! They tend to be so compelling though.

            Hopefully.
Yeah mine too. I dread to think how many books long it must be.
It sounds like it has the potential to be really swoony too. So can’t wait to see what it’s like.

            Liked by 1 person

            1. Sooo true!!
I know, most of the books for the second half are still to be revealed!
Oh yeah I’ve seen the two for Moon Goddess and Beneath the Sea, both very pretty 😍
Babel had awesome covers. I love the title on the UK one!!
Ivory Key covers are different, I have a soft spot for the UK as it is green and the two brothers are on the back cover as well so bonus!! 😍😍
              Haha 😂😂 definitely 🥰

              1. I think they’re appearing, just slowly 🐌 can’t wait to see some of them though.
Have you seen Waterstones special edition of Moon Goddess?
I do too. I quire like that it’s vertical for a change too. Love the colour scheme too – quite unusual but really stands out
Ooh are they? I’ve seen it but didnt realise it carried over to the back!! I do love the green as well. I’ve ordered the other one but thats basically because it was a signed hardback. Think it’s going to be one of those books that doesn’t come out though 🙄

I just had a look at the moon goddess Waterstones edition… green edges. I wouldn’t have guessed that but I think it goes with the flowers on the front. Sooo pretty!!
I love the vertical title and how bold it is. The colour scheme is great. I hope Waterstones do a special edition for it!
Yes, I saw the back of it on the authors insta. Ohh it looks like a stunning hardback and a signed one… so cool! I really hope it arrives!! ❤️

It does look beautiful 😍 I saw it in store and it matches in so well. But I was good & stuck with the copy I’d ordered.
Ooh they might do!! Her first series was super popular after all. Which I must read this year!!
I’ll look it up later then!! If it doesn’t I’ll probably get the paperback sometime as it is stunning. I do really want a signed one though so fingers crossed 🤞
