So, today I am doing a different post because I wanted to talk about MUSIC!! One of my great loves.
I have (kind of) created a tag (it is basically those music bingo boards on Instagram but in a post) but I’m not treating it as a tag to be honest. I think the headings help with the format of this post and I would love it if people wanted to do this solely because I love getting more music recommendations. But really this post is just for me to shout about music and nothing more. (Great Sophie, that makes no sense and you always over- complicate things)
(just in case and to explain):
- Link back to original so she can see your answers and listen to the tunes
- For every prompt you choose to do, name 1-5 songs (you can use my graphics)
- Have fun and play your music LOUD
Ghost Town – The Specials//“Government leaving the youth on the shelf”
This is actually written about my home city. It is about the violence at nightclubs etc. but then was more when my parents were young, it’s average now I would say. But I do think it is cool that there is a song about my city even if it isn’t the merriest.
All I Ask – Adele//“I don’t need your honesty
It’s already in your eyes”
For the UK, I would pick Adele because she feels very British as she is a Londoner from the way she speaks and everything. Plus, I love her songs and I have heard them all the time in secondary school, (fun fact: my geography teacher taught Adele).
In Case You Don’t Live Forever – Ben Platt//“I’ve waited way too long to say,
Everything you mean to me.”
The Romantic – Lauryn Marie//“I am too deeply obsessed with having the perfect love”
Disposable – The Painter//“You waste my love, because it’s free”
Cheap Thrills – Sia//“Baby I don’t need dollar bills to have fun tonight”
Still Into You – Paramore//“Let ’em wonder how we got this far
‘Cause I don’t really need to wonder at all”
LA Devotee – Panic! At The Disco//“You got two black eyes from loving too hard”
My Man Music – Stooshe//“Music is my baby, He’s gonna play me.”
The Greatest Showman//“All the stars we steal from the night sky
Will never be enough.”
The Greatest Showman was a really big hit and I do adore the soundtrack. ‘This Is Me’ is an absolute tune, ‘Never Enough’ is beautiful and ‘From Now On’ is one of my favourites. It is an obvious choice, but it earned that status.
Stuck in Love//“With an arrogant smile, he shook his head.”
There are so many movie soundtracks that are amazing (including Shrek (literally so good), Guardians of the Galaxy, Dirty Dancing and more) but the Stuck In Love soundtrack is underrated and I love it (I actually love the movie a lot too). All the songs have the same vibe and I love the moody, calm feel. ‘American Man’ is brilliant and this movie even has an original song ‘I Won’t Love You Any Less’ which I like as well.
Frozen II (and Disney songs in general)//“All my life I’ve been torn
But I’m here for a reason.”
I love so many Disney songs, I mean the soundtrack for Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and Moana are amazing. But I’m currently obsessed with Frozen II and I’m not even sorry anymore. ‘Show Yourself’ and ‘The Next Right Thing’ are amazing!
Dear Evan Hanson//“Maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay”
I love the album, simple as.
This Beautiful life- Colony House//“There must be more, To this wonderful, Terrible, Beautiful life”
Love- Lana Del Ray//“The world is yours and you can’t refuse it”
Lookalike – Conan Gray//“But when you look in his eyes, Do you think of mine?”
Things I Thought I’d Never Do – Jack Savoretti//“This is my confession, My deep and darkest secret, I’ve been acting like my demons
Reach- S Club 7//“No-one knows just what the future holds, There ain’t nothing you can’t be.”
Year 3000- Busted//“Not much has changed but they lived under water.”
Cha Cha Slide – DJ Casper//“Everybody clap your hands”
Tragedy – Steps//“In a wad of tears I slowly drown, Going home.”
In my Car (I’ll be the driver)- Shania Twain//“I don’t mind if you think you’re the strong one.”
All these songs just take me back immediately, I mean every sleepover had S Club 7 involved and all the MacDonald’s party had Busted playing. The school discos always had ‘Cha Cha Slide’ and ‘Tragedy’ playing. Then me and my sister insisted on ‘In My Car’ being played in the car all the time.
Fight Song- Rachel Platten//“Can you hear my voice this time?”
Try Everything – Shakira//“Nobody learns without getting it wrong”
Brave – Sara Bareilles//“Maybe one of these days you can let the light in”
Even the titles of these songs suggest that they are motivating and ‘Try Everything’ will forever and always be an amazing song.
You Make My Dreams – Hall & Oates//‘Cos I ain’t the way you found me, And I’ll never be the same”
I Think We’re Alone Now – Tiffany//“The beating of our hearts is the only sound”
Everlasting Love – U2//“This love will last forever”
Only You – Yazoo//“All I needed was the love you gave”
I Want To Break Free – Queen//“It’s strange but it’s true, I can’t get over the way you love me like you do”
Truthfully, I don’t think I have every cried at a song, but I have one’s which make me sad (in the good way) so…
Call My Dad – AJR//“I feel so broken, I wanna go home”
Ok so this isn’t a particularly sad song, but I always attach it to death actually. Because I first heard around when my grandad passed away and it just made me think ‘what do you do when you can’t call them?’ so it makes me feel thankful and melancholy at the same time.
This Was A Home Once – Bad Suns//“My bedroom looks the same
But that is not how it feels”
So again not typically sad but I think it really captures a bit of the sadness of growing up and looking back at your childhood home that was so comforting at the time but it isn’t really being the same as it used to be. I do love this song a lot.
Villains – Emma Blackery//“There in your ego lies your weakness”
I have been loving this whole album lately!! It has a classic feel, you know? I love the song ‘Villains part 2’ (any song which has the words ‘hero’ or ‘villain’ in I will usually love) and ‘Icarus’ A LOT!!!!
Bullet – The Haunt//“Fool is the one who plays the game”
I love the atmosphere and you have to listen to it from start to finish.
Boys Will Be Bugs by Cavetown //“And if you wanna cry
Make sure that they never see it”
It is a bit weird but I love the lyrics and vibe.
Starring Role – Marina//“You don’t love me, big fucking deal”//“Sometimes I ignore you, so I feel in control”//“Fed up with the fantasies, that cover what is wrong”//
Marina is one of my favourites EVER and part of that is because of her amazing lyrics across multiple songs but I thought I would name the one I first fell in love with or else I would literally have to name all her songs here.
A World Alone – Lorde//“They’re studying business, I study the floor”//“Maybe the Internet raised us, Or maybe people are jerks”//“we’re dancing in a world alone”//“people are talking, Let ’em talk”//
It is a challenge to pick a favourite ‘Lorde’ song as she is an icon, but I think ‘A World Alone’ is my favourite. I love the overall message and feel. It has so many great lines.
From Eden – Hozier//“There’s something tragic about you, Something so magic about you”//“Innocence died screaming, Honey, ask me, I should know”//“There’s something broken about this, But I might be hoping about this, Oh what a sin”//
I love Hozier’s lyrics and the vibe of all his songs so yes.
Before You Go and Somebody You Loved – Lewis Capaldi//“‘Cause now that they’re gone all I hear were the words that I needed to say”
I loved Lewis Capaldi’s whole album A LOT!! I do love the singles, but my favourites are ‘Maybe’ and ‘Forever’.
You Should Be Sad – Halsey//“‘Cause you’re not half the man you think that you are”
Halsey has a great voice and her songs have so much feeling in them, they are really good to listen to. I think my favourite is ‘Ashley’ off this album, but this is a good song too.
Dance Monkey by Tones and I//“I’ve never seen anybody do the things you do before”
It is catchy and fun!!
Physical by Dua Lipa//“Common love isn’t for us”
I am mentioning this because I LOVE ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ off her album, such a good song!!
You Belong With Me – Taylor Swift//“And she’ll never know your story like I do.”
So go back ages ago and I asked my sister to tell me a story or something (I was bored) so she whacked out this detailed ‘could be a rom-com’ story out about a girl and boy who were next door neighbours and wrote notes and held them up in the window for each other ….. [blah blah] and then at the end they have notes which say I love you and ta da. So, does this sound familiar?? Yes, it is the music video to ‘You Belong With Me’ and I thought she came up with it on the spot and was amazed. She told me later it was this music video and I’ve never been able to trust anyone since. *looks into the distance with a moody background behind me*
Mr. Brightside – The Killers//“Destiny is calling me”
Oh yes, this old classic. The rumour is everyone has a memory with this song and I certainly do. At my Year 11 prom there were many songs naturally, but I remember this song came on and one of my friends was so excited. I mean we all got up to dance but she was sooooo excited about it.
Love Story – Taylor Swift//“They’re trying to tell me how to feel.
This love is difficult but it’s real.”
Taylor Swift again. What can I say?? She was a defining artist. So, in school each tutor group in year 7 had to do an assembly in front of everyone based on a topic. My tutor group theme was valentine’s day, so my group of friends decided to do a dance routine to Love Story and I quickly decided to be prop master, so I didn’t have to go up in front of assembly.
Guilty – Paloma Faith//“Believed in the fictional
Then let everything slip away.”
Wicked Game – Grace Carter//“Strange what desire will make foolish people do”
Heaven’s Gate – Fall Out Boy//“‘Cause everything else is a substitute for your love”
I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker – Sandi Thom//“I was born too late into a world that doesn’t care.”
Look, I’m not saying I’m singing any of them well, but I just want to belt these songs out like my life depends on it and c’mon the lyrics to ‘I Wish I was A Punk Rocker’ are just addictive.
AJR//“I bet this Instagram’s a load of fun
It’s best to show the best of everyone”
AJR are a group I never imagined liking as it is the opposite to what my taste usually is and even listening to them now, I’m still kind of surprised. But I LOVE the energy, the unique sound they have and some of their lyrics are SO smart *birthday party* and I probably like every single song of theirs. And ‘Don’t Throw Out My Lego’ is such a mood!!
Peer Pressure – L Devine//“I just suck it up and do whatever they want
Tell me what I want”
Again, not my taste of music but I love this song SO much!! The lyrics are so true and really highlight peer pressure so well. The style has almost a ‘talking’ singing aspect, but it makes you pay more attention to the lyrics and it is so catchy. I’m literally obsessed.
7 years (acoustic) – Lindsey Sterling//*electric violin sounds*
This is an instrumental song which I never imagined making it onto my playlists as I love lyrics so much, but I love it. It is a cover with an electric violin, and I love the way it sounds, it is almost strong but gentle. Plus, I know the lyrics so in my head I am singing along, and I think this one is better than the original… maybe.
Marina – Froot//“I’ve been dancing with the devil
I love that he pretends to care”
So, it was a challenge to not write all Marina’s albums here but for the sake of diversity I just picked one. I decided to go for Froot because there are so many great songs that are catchy and full of amazing lyrics. Like, this is literally a perfect album. My favourites are ‘Immortal’, ‘Forget’, ‘Blue’, ‘Happy’, ‘Savages’ and the rest of them.
P!nk – Beautiful Trauma//“I wouldn’t change a thing
‘Cause you’re the one I wanna sink with”
P!nk is such a classic artist for me and I think her songs are catchy but they can be emotional as well. I think her last two albums have been her best work. I picked this one over as I love so many of the songs. My favourites are ‘I Am Here’, ‘For Now’, ‘Whatever You Want’, ‘Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken’.
Greyson Chance – portraits//“But your addicted to a sadness to that feeling”
I found this album last year and became obsessed easily. I love his voice, the lyrics, the vibe, the everything. I could happily listen to every song. My favourites are ‘White Roses’, ‘Stand’, ‘Timekeeper’.
Hozier – Hozier (deluxe)//“The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you”
This is such an atmospheric album and definitely is suited to being played in the dark. I just love it. I will always go back to it and fall in love again. My favourites are ‘Work Song’, ‘Take Me To Church’, ‘Sedated’ and ‘In A Week’.
Midnight Memories – One Direction//“Baby, this is what the night is for”
One Direction’s videos always captured what you wanted a band to be like. You know, it looks like a lot of fun and that is why I think their videos are really great to watch.
Inevitable – Orla Gartland//“And I think it over every night
Then face the day and wear a smile.”
This video says so much by not saying much and I’m obsessed. I love the home video style as it makes it feel so personal and I think the bit at the end where see the beginning is so heart-breaking. It is an excellent video and I love the song too.
The Man – Taylor Swift//“Could all be separated from my good ideas and power moves?”
You know this video is so powerful. The video earned respect and love, simple as.
(it limits at 100 songs for the link, so I have cut albums down to my favourites in case you wanted to play any)
So, I’m not going to tag anyone like I said but if you wanted to do this tag (??) or even adapt this tag, please do tell me as I would love to see your answers.
BUT, I am going to tell Beth @ Me and Ink (who’s she?? Yep, my sister) to do it because (1) I’m curious about her answers (and I hope it won’t all be Fleetwood Mac) and (2) she never reads so it is a good idea for you. No, I’m sorry, you did read a page in 2012. 😉
Tell me any music you love and why. (I’m listening intently)
